Surf’s up, you guys!! This week we’ve been enjoying the sand and sun as we took our first real family trip to celebrate our son’s birthday in sunny and beautiful Los Angeles! Yesterday we spent the day at Disney and I was so wiped out I didn’t know that I would be able to give you a great Fave Five… luckily, dad came to the rescue with his Fave Five this week.
I mentioned it on social media but my husband works in film and what was originally planned as a family trip has quickly become a business trip as he tries to make all the moves we need to finally move out West. Being here has been so bittersweet as we fall in love with the city more and more the longer we’re here. Still, as dad’s business trip comes to an end today we’re so excited for our family vacation to officially begin!!
With that, I introduce you to my husband: Stephen.
Hello from This is How I Dad… just kidding! My name is Stephen and I’m so happy to be giving you my most necessary things this week which Christine has told me she calls her ‘Fave Five’.
Here’s my “Fave Five” for our family travels and my business trip this week:
THIS WEEK’S “FAVE FIVE”
Want/Need: Things change so often here that I need to be prepared to know where I’m going and when. My most used and completely necessary apps this week have been:
Google Maps: live traffic is a must in LA!
Yelp: being able to see reviews when suggesting a place to meet is a must. Also being able to find out the parking situation from customers themselves is also helpful.
Google Docs: I’ve been using Google Docs to keep my schedule organized as well as write down ideas whenever they come to me. I always know what I write is safe in the cloud.
IMDB: Being able to quickly review the people I’m meeting- what they’ve done, what they’re working on, and other important facts- has been so critical to my success in these meetings.
Instagram: Besides being able to look people up, sharing photos with my friends and family on the East Coast helps me connected with them.
Wear: I’ve been running in and out of meetings, lunches, drinks, and premieres this week and I’ve been able to transition from dad to director with the help of an accessory my wife gifted to me at Christmas:
This leather bowtie is a show stopper and no matter where I am I’m always asked about it. I love how easily it slips on and off and how small it is. If something comes up at the last minute I can slip it out of my blazer pocket and be ready to go in no time.
Read: Every Richard Scarry Book ever written. We bought him the Cars & Trucks book for his birthday and its come in hand during his toddler moments.
Eat: My wife is not forcing me to say this but those energy bites she made earlier this week have been a life saver! We were in such a rush trying to catch our 7 am flight Tuesday that it left us no time to buy a proper lunch for Julian. I don’t know if Christine’s ever mentioned it before but that boy can eat and if he’s not full he gets Hangry!!
Besides that we’ve only dipped our toes into the awesome food LA has to offer but my favorites so far would need to be the enchiladas at La Playita Cafe on Hermosa Beach and the sweets at Jolly Holiday in Disney. Definitely the best macaron I’ve ever had!
Play: Before we left we gave Julian an early birthday present, a wooden school bus. We thought he would like it but he LOVED it and spent at least an hour driving kids around the house and dropping them off which gave us all the time we needed to pack all those small items. We may be coming home to little wooden children in every crevice of the house but it was totally worth it!
So that’s the list of my Fave Five this week. Thanks for reading along!!
